RESHAPE 17

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY COMPETITION - programmable skins

INTRODUCTION

Zooming to materials’ nanoscale has led to big inventions in the fields of biology, medicine, and material engineering.  In the Information age, technology emerges rapidly providing scientists with more accurate tools to hack existing materials or to create new ones with customized/tailored properties. Materials designed by nature or able to adjust to environmental conditions are now a reality.
Fascinated by these new advances, fashion design has been enriched with smart materials, 3d printed techniques, microorganisms and bacteria, aiming to promote environmental awareness or interactive behaviors either through wearables’ usage or through their fabrication process.

BRIEF

Wearables are becoming an active, supplemental skin that not only protect our body but also facilitate functions such as growth, movement, respiration and nutrition or rehabilitate the environment. Becoming a new medium able to regulate the relation between our body and its surroundings, wearables can now collect and exchange information producing dynamic outputs. Reshape aims to enhance these impulses in fashion design, proposing a new challenge to makers and designers: RESHAPE 17 | Programmable Skins Competition. The proposals will focus on wearables as a prosthetic skins providing augmented functions. RESHAPE 17 goes beyond ubiquitous computing, towards integrated and holistic strategies with the objective to move beyond electronics,  in favor of programmable materials.
We seek for innovative yet feasible design ideas that can be proved by prototypes. Interdisciplinary processes and experimentation are vital for RESHAPE 17 competition, therefore there is no design and fabrication limitations.

JURY

A panel of experts from the fields of fashion design, digital fabrication and computation, will select the three winning proposals. All projects will be evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10 according to the following categories:

CRITERIAS

CONCEPT IDEA

Significant attention will be given to those projects that reconsider the idea of conventional contemporary clothing in an inventive and experimental way, establishing interconnections between users, environment and data.

PROTOTYPE FABRICABILITY

Reshape aims to merge both design and making in a complete creative process. Therefore, each design approach must present a clear fabrication strategy, materializing design solutions with tools that are available in a Fab Lab or Maker Space.

DISSEMINATION STATEGY

In order to produce a real impact is crucial to set a dissemination strategy, proposing convincing scenarios of implementation for each proposal.

Apart from the winners, the jury will select 7 honorable mentions which, together with the winners, will be included in the online platform of RESHAPE. In the website there will be a direct link to each project with information of each designer.
This year, due to Reshape’s collaboration with In(3D)dustry, the selected projects will have the opportunity to be part of:

RESHAPE - FORUM

RESHAPE - ROUND TABLE

In(3D)ustry and Reshape will organize a Symposium event to promote an exchange ideas around topics based on the innovation field. A panel of experts with the specialized background in areas such as fashion design, product innovation and wearable technology will examine and discuss about opportunities for further business development and future applications of the submitted design proposals.

RESHAPE EXHIBITION

During the event of In(3d)ustry – from needs to solutions will be showcased the Reshape exhibition organized by Noumena in collaboration with Materfad: Centro de materiales de Barcelona. Reshape Exhibition will collect the best projects proposed for the Reshape competition and present it to the audiance of the Industry Week in Barcelona.

RESHAPE 1:1 CORNER

The winners of Reshape competition will meet with entrepreneurs, experts from the field of education and research to present their work and propose their solutions to market needs. This format wants to hence new collaborations and partnerships among the parts involved.
