Summer of year 2019 became significant because of enormous forest fires across Siberia and continental Russia. Massive forest fires not only affect the ecosystem, but also cripple health of local residents. People stay in their villages sometimes completely cut off from the outside world. One of the biggest issue is peoples personal safety in smoke-blanketed area. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a more common cause of death during a fire than skin burns. It became the main reason to chronic illness.
At present, there are several ways to neutralize carbon monoxide, but the most popular is catalysis – the chemical reaction of carbon monoxide and manganese oxide. The catalyst substance used in fire protection products – hopcalyte, is produced in powders.
The filter made of hopcalyte has a limited service life and must be replaced if used for long. The design is a modular protection mask that makes possible to track the current state of the filter.
PURE Mask consists of several different layers – general filter layer, hopcalyte layer, sensors collecting data and structural material.
Original prototype uses stretch material with 3d printed skeleton. The frame enables to bind all the layers into one stretchable material.
Sensors measures oxygen emissions and predicts the needed time to change the hopcalyte module. Mobile app also help to track the nearest pickup point to get new filters. Just like in traditional masks, filters may vary from the different situation and smoke composition. App may be diblicated for smart watches and other small devices.
